Marketing Your Interior Design Business is NOT About You

I talk to a lot of designers who say, "UGH, I am terrible at marketing. I just HATE talking about myself."

let's all just pause for a minute.

pause....

....pause....

.....pause....

MARKETING IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

So if you "hate talking about yourself" then PERFECT!!! It will BE SO EASY to market your services and company because you shouldn't be talking about yourself at all (in fact, if you have been and wonder why your marketing isn't working....that could be why).

As an interior designer, you have a major leg up on many other service providers. You actually have beautiful pictures to show off what you do. Part of your job is finding inspiration and sourcing new materials and pieces. You have professional pictures of your work, in progress pictures of flat lays, behind the scenes pictures of you at market or in showrooms...

You don't have to post anything about yourself ever!

Yes, your clients are hiring YOU to do their project. Yes, they want to understand WHO you are since they'll be working with you for a long time.

BUT THAT DOES NOT = YOU TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF.

No.

YOU are not the solution they need.

But guess what is?

Your services and your design process and your connections and your expertise.

And guess how you can show that without saying a dang word about yourself?

As an interior designer, you have a major leg up on many other service providers. You actually have beautiful pictures to show off what you do. You don't have to post anything about yourself ever! YOU are not the solution they need.

01 | Show your portfolio.

02 | Show the results your clients enjoyed.

03 | Share the challenges your designs solved for clients.

04 | Share the process of getting from idea to installation.

05 | Share what it's like to work with your team.

06 | Share what goes into making a design.

07 | Share what a presentation is like.

08 | Share what an install day is like.

09 | Share what misconceptions they may have about working with a designer.

10 | Help them understand WHEN they should hire a designer.

11 | Walk them through HOW you work with their contractors.

NONE OF THOSE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOU.

The way you write your posts, the humor you use (or don't use), the glimpses they get into what happens as you take clients from A to Z, THAT is how they will feel like they know you.

Not because you had to post pictures of yourself and talk about yourself.

Nope.

Your clients want to know their problem will be solved.

Even if it's just "I have an ugly room and I want it to be beautiful"

They want to know your company and your services and your process can solve it for them in the most enjoyable and streamlined way possible.

Show them THAT.

And, because I practice what I preach - I went back through my instagram posts (one piece of my marketing) and it's been forever since I posted anything about myself. Yet, I would bet you feel like you know me and you have a solid understanding of how I can help you.

With my marketing, it's never about me - it's always about you.
